You may remember reading a report in last year’s Winter edition of the WES News of Ann Hughes and Vicky Easton’s trip to El Bronco Ranch in Hungary for a weekend break. Well the really good news is that there will be a weekend break for two offered as a prize at this years National Show! The lucky winners will only need to pay for flights and transfers to the ranch. Also, any current WES member will be offered a 10% discount on holidays to the Ranch! The ranch comes highly recommended by Ann and Vicky and is only a two hour flight away from the UK. www.elbronco.hu A big thank you to Ida Ejby of the ranch for arranging this for WES! For more information please email sarahhadley1@btinternet.com

Mick Carder and David Lloyd are once again heading our National Show Team and if last year’s show is anything to go by, it will be another good one! The judge is being booked and will be announced in the coming weeks. There are still some vacancies on the Show Team eg Stable Manager, Office team, stewards. If you would like to help or find out more please contact Mick Carder (details on Contacts page) who will be pleased to hear from you. It is a great way to get involved if you cannot compete and we don’t mind if people want to “job share”. This year EquiTrek Tregaron will be sponsoring the Freestyle Class. Sponsorship for other classes is welcome.

Over the bitterly cold Easter Weekend the annual 2 three day clinics took place. Bishop Burton clinic – The weather may have been bitterly cold but there was a very warm welcome at the WES Northern Clinic at Bishop Burton College. Thanks to Margaret Kemp, together with Instructors Bruce Lawrence and Lee Rutter for a well organised and very friendly event with three days of instruction and the traditional social gathering on the Friday evening. It’s an event not to be missed. Moreton Morrell Clinic – Thank you to everyone who came and got on with having a great time despite the minus something ridiculous weather. Thank you to Scherie Dermody and Michael Langford who stood there teaching us for 3 days and probably haven’t thawed out yet. Thank you for David Hudspeth for organising it. Thank you to Farriers Fayre for keeping us fed and watered. Thank you to the Western Department and the Pullman Western Store for providing the retail therapy. And a big thank you to a lovely bunch of horses of all breeds, ages, sizes and colours who behaved very well on the whole!

Not as many members attended the AGM this year but it was good to see those that did! Minutes will be produced in due course, but here are a few snippets from the meeting. In 2012 there was a total of 29 shows (affiliated/approved). We already have 25 booked this year already so things are looking good! Plans for the National Show are well underway and the judge is about to be booked. We still need more people to fill jobs on the Show Team eg. Stable Manager, Show Office Admin, Stewards. Mick Carder and David Lloyd will once again do the Show Secretary/Manager jobs so if you would like to know about the help required please contact one of them. EquiTrek will be sponsoring the Freestyle Class this year. There will again be a Charity class, this time in aid of Prostate Cancer Research. Reminder to members that membership can be taken out and also renewed via Paypal on the website. Day Membership has been withdrawn. Trail Award Scheme – there were 4 buckles and 13 certificates (various levels) awarded in 2012 There has recently been an Instructors Assessment and there is another planned for later in the year.
The 2012 show will no doubt go down in WES history as being the most entertaining show we have ever had. It was a great show that was full of laughter. After a slowish start the show ran smoothly many thanks to the excellent, very hard working show team. Over Friday and Saturday, Areas 3, 6 and 13 competed in the Inter-Area Challenge which was won by Area 13 (Michael Langford and Anne Batley). With all the hype beforehand about the Pink Pleasure Class it could have been a disappointment but it certainly lived up to all expectations! I have never heard so many people crying with laughter! Thank you to everyone who has donated and thank you to all the competitors who made so much effort, especially David Brindley and Nigel Crowe who were such good sports. With the Gift Aid added over £2000 has been raised! After the laughter of the Pink Pleasure Class we then had the excitement of the Freestyle Reining. 5 entries this year, all were fantastic and the costumes were fabulous. Chris Dalton won the class with his super smooth James Bond routine. Later in the evening we all enjoyed the WES’s Got Talent [...]

“COOL for KIDS” ”Young Western Riders” The show season is well under way and we are already seeing some great riding from the few Youth riders we have with many youth classes having only one or two riders or worse still, no entries at all and with so few youth riders taking up the sport, we are all going to need to put our thinking caps on and come up with a few ideas..! If showing is the pinnacle of all our hard work and the putting into practise of all those hours spent perfecting a particular manoeuvre that finally went really well for you under the eyes of your fellow competitors and the judges, then you should be proud of yourself for each step on the long road to perfection is one step closer to a great achievement. Nothing would make me happier than to have a gang of youth riders bombarding me with e-mails and requests to set-up clinics and to run training camps to teach Western Riding and to build a team of riders who in time would be capable of and proud to represent Britain in European and Global competition, but this is not about making me [...]

Important Notice to All Area Reps, County Reps and WES Approved Instructors. Over the past month I have been negotiating with the WES Insurers in respect of the renewal of the Society Insurance cover. The underwriters are becoming increasingly strict in respect of their requirements, in part because of the inflationary claims which are being made due to injuries. Whilst WES has never had a claim Horse Riding is seen as a dangerous and Risk high sport due to the high cost of treatment following injury. In order to retain our cover at a competitive rate we have had to agree to a number of changes to our rules in respect of Instructors and activities. We must reinforce that any Society activity covered by the Society insurance must be run by a member who has attended the Show Managers seminar. All activities should be risk assessed and a copy of the risk assessment must be submitted with the approval form. All Society activities involving horses not just shows must be granted approval – This includes Clinics, Shows and Trail Rides. Social activities do not. Approval to be sought from the Show Coordinator Mick Carder – forms are available to download [...]
